Traditional Bread Stuffing

By

Allow ¾ cup stuffing for each pound of ready-to-cook chicken or turkey. This recipe makes enough for a 12 pound turkey.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 ½ cups chopped celery (with leaves)
  • 1 cup margarine or butter
  • 9 cups bread cubes – soft or hard
  • 1 ½ tsp dried sage leaves
  • 1 tsp dried thyme leaves
  • ½ tsp pepper

Preparation

Step 1

Cook and stir the onion and celery in margarine in a 10” skillet until onion is tender. Stir in about 1/3 of the bread cubes. Turn into a deep bowl. Add remaining ingredients; toss. Stuff turkey just before roasting. Makes 9 cups stuffing.
Alternatively, turn into a slow cooker about 3 hours before serving. Add 2 cups chicken broth to moisten. Cook on low for about 3 hours.
