Favorite Apple Pie

Ingredients

  • Pie Crust:
  • 6 large tart apples
  • Pastry for 2 crust (9-inch) pie
  • 1/2 cup granulated sguar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/8 tsp ginger
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 3 tbsp butter or margarine
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 4 to 5 tbsp cold water

Preparation

Step 1

Peel and quarter apples into saucepan. Add 1/4 cup cold water, simmer until tender, about 5 minutes. Cool. Line 9-inch pie pan with 1/2 pastry, fill with apples. Combine remaining ingredients, except butter, sprinkle over apples, dot with butter. Moisten edges of crust. Adjust top crust with 6 vents, trim and seal edges. Bake in very hot oven, 450 F, 10 minutes, reduce heat to moderate oven and bake 45 minutes longer.
