Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar (first amount)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1-1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts
  • Grated rind & juice of 1 lemon
  • 1/4 cup sugar (2nd amount)

Preparation

Step 1

Cream shortening; add 1 cup sugar and eggs and beat well.
Add flour, salt & baking powder alternating with milk.
Add chopped nuts & lemon rind.
Pour into greased loaf pan.
Bake at 350° F. about 40 minutes.
As soon as taken from oven, pour over bread the 1/4 cup sugar dissolved in the lemon juice.
Let stand in pan till cool.

Double recipe - Make 2 loaves & freeze one.
