Ingredients

  • For Cake:
  • 1/2 cup margarine or butter, softened
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1/2 cup margarine or butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • 3 eggs
  • Powdered Sugar Glaze:
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp margarine or butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 to 2 tbsp warm water
  • mix all ingredients in a medium bowl until smooth and spreadable.

Preparation

Step 1

Heat oven to 350.
Cut 1/2 cup margarine into 1 cup flour until particles are size of small peas. Sprinkle 2 tbsp water over mixture; mix with fork. Gather pastry in ball; divide in half. Pat each half into rectangle, 12x3 inches, about 3 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
Heat 1/2 cup margarine and 1 cup water to rolling boil in 2-quart saucepan; remove from heat. Quickly stir in almond extract and remaining 1 cup flour. Stir vigorously over low heat about 1 minute or until mixture forms a ball; remove from heat. Add eggs and beat until smooth.
Spread half of the topping over each rectangle. Bake about 1 hour or until topping is crisp and brown; cool.
Spread with Powdered Sugar Glaze; sprinkle with nuts.
