Ingredients

  • ¼

    cup plus 2 tbsp butter, softened

  • cups sifted powdered sugar

  • tsp milk

  • ¼

    tsp vanilla extract

  • 42

    about 42 maraschino cherries with stems

  • 1

    (12 oz) package semisweet chocolate morsels

  • 1

    tbsp shortening

Directions

Beat butter until creamy; gradually add sugar, beating well. Blend in milk and vanilla. Chill mixture 2 hours or until firm. Drain cherries, and dry thoroughly on paper towels. Place bowl of sugar mixture in a bowl of ice to keep mixture chilled. Shape a small amount of sugar mixture around each cherry. Place cherries on a wax paper-lined baking sheet; chill 2 hours or until firm. Combine chocolate morsels and shortening in top of a double boiler; bring water to a boil. Reduce heat to low; cook until chocolate melts. Dip each cherry by the stem into chocolate. Place on a wax paper-lined baking sheet; chill until firm. Store in a cool place.
