German Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 4oz pkg Baker's German sweet chocolate
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 cups flour
  • tsp. baking soda
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs, seperated
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Coconut Pecan Filling and Frosting

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350

Cover bottoms of 3, 9 inch round cake pans with parchment paper, grease sides of pans.

Microwave chocolate and water on high 1 1/2 to 2 minutes or until chocolate is almost melted stirring until chocolate is melted

Mix flour, baking soda and set aside. Beat butter and sugar together in mixer bowl, mixing until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks one at a time. Blend in melted chocolate and vanilla.

Beat egg whites until peaks form. Gently stir into batter. Pour evenly into prepared pans.

Bake 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Immediately run a small metal spatula around the edges of pans. Cool in pans 15 minutes, remove layers from pans and cool on cooling racks. Cool layers completely.

Spread Coconut Pecan Filling between cake layers and on top of cake.
