Ingredients

  • Patties

  • 1⅓

    lb (600 g) lean ground beef

  • 1

    clove garlic, chopped

  • ¼ cup (60 ml) chopped red onion

  • 1

    tbsp (15 ml) chili powder

  • 1

    tsp (5 ml) ground cumin

  • ¼ cup (60 ml) salsa

  • 1

    egg

  • cup (160 ml) breadcrumbs

  • Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

  • Grilled Peppers

  • 2

    tbsp (30 ml) olive oil

  • 1

    clove garlic, chopped

  • 2

    tsp (10 ml) lemon juice

  • 1

    tsp (5 ml) lemon zest

  • Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

  • 1

    red pepper, quartered

  • 1

    yellow pepper, quartered

  • Garnish

  • 4 to 6

    onion buns

    slices of Canadian Mozzarella

  • cup (80 ml) homemade or store-bought guacamole

  • 2

    tbsp (30 ml) sour cream

  • 2

    tbsp (30 ml) chopped fresh coriander

Directions

Preheat BBQ to medium-high or the oven to 425 °F (210 °C). Place beef and patty ingredients in a mixing bowl. Season to taste and combine. Divide preparation into four to six parts and shape into patties. Reserve. Place oil, garlic, lemon juice and zest in a mixing bowl. Season to taste and add peppers. Toss until peppers are thoroughly coated with mixture. Place patties and peppers on grill or on parchment-covered baking sheet in center of oven. Grill peppers to taste. Cook burgers 12-15 minutes turning them over once. Top cooked patties with Mozzarella, red pepper, another Mozzarella slice and yellow pepper. While cheese melts over patties, heat burger buns. Assemble burgers and top with a dollop of guacamole and sour cream. Sprinkle with coriander.
