Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup Romano cheese
  • 1/4 cup parsley, minced
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • Sauce-
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, crushed
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup red wine
  • 2 28-ounce cans tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup parsley
  • 6 to 8 basil leaves, torn into strips

Step 1

Combine all ingredients for meatballs and form into 2-inch balls. Sauté on all sides until golden brown. Set aside.



Sauté the onion, garlic and a pinch of salt and pepper in olive oil until translucent. Add wine and reduce until syrupy. Add the tomatoes and simmer for 20 minutes, then add parsley, basil and adjust salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to shallow pan and add meatballs. Simmer for 45 minutes.

Serve on bread with shredded mozzarella cheese melted on top.

Makes 4 servings.
