Ingredients
- 4 medium apples, sliced
- 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 cup stale pound or angel food cake crumbs (or soft breadcrumbs)
- 4-1/2 Tbsp butter, softened and divided
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground allspice
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- Pinch of salt
- 1/4 cup apple cider
- Vanilla ice cream (optional garnish)
Preparation
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 375°F.
Liberally coat a 1-1/2-qt or 2-qt baking dish with 1 Tbsp of the butter.
Combine the apples and lemon juice in a medium-size bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the cake crumbs, 3 Tbsp butter, sugar, cinnamon, allspice, ginger, and salt.
Place half of the apples in the buttered baking dish. Cover with half of the breadcrumb mixture. Add the remaining apple slices to the dish and drizzle the apple cider over the apples. Top with the remaining crumb mixture and dot with the remaining butter.
Bake for 45 minutes, or until the apples are tender, the sauce is bubbly, and the crumbs are nicely browned. Serve hot with a scoop of ice cream, if desired.
