Ingredients
- Frosting:
- 3 (1 ounce) blocks unsweetened chocolate
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3 eggs separated
- 2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup thick sour cream
- 1 teaspoon red food coloring
- 6 tablespoons butter
- 3 (1 ounce) blocks unsweetened chocolate
- Dash salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1 1/2 (1 pound) boxes confectioners sugar, sifted
- 1/2 cup evaporated milk
Preparation
Step 1
Combine chocolate and water, cool slightly; add soda . Cream butter in a mixing bowl until creamy; add vanilla. Stir in 1 1/2 cups sugar gradually, then beat until fluffy. Add egg yolks and beat well.
Sift flour and salt together. Add flour mixture alternately with sour cream, beating until smooth. Add chocolate mixture and food coloring and blend thoroughly.
Whip egg whites until foamy. Add remaining sugar a little at a time beating after each addition until stiff peaks are formed. Fold into first mixture until batter looks even.
Pour into two 9 inch round cake pans lined with waxed paper. Bake in a moderate oven at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes. Cool in pans 5 minutes; remove from pans and peel off paper. Cool completely before frosting.
Frosting: Melt butter and chocolate in a quart saucepan over low heat. Stir in salt. Blend in sugar, vanilla and enough evaporated milk for smooth spreading.
