CANDY CANE COOKIES

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 shortening like solid crisco
  • 1 cup confectioners sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food color
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract

Preparation

Step 1

Heat oven to 375 degrees. Mix butter, shortening, confectioners sugar, egg, vanilla and almond extract thoroughly. Blend in flour and salt. Divide dough in half. Blend in peppermint extract and red food color into one half.

Shape 1 teaspoon of dough from each half into a 4 inch rope. Roll them on a lightly floured board or parchment paper. Places ropes side by side and press together lightly and twist. Complete all cookies and then place on an ungreased baking sheet and curve the top to make a candy cane.

Bake about 9 minutes or until set and very light brown. For garnish you can mix 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy and 1/2 cup granular sugar together and immediately sprinkle on cookies when they come our of the over and then remove from baking sheet. You can also sprinkle with powered sugar.
