Chocolate Caramel Brownies

COOK'S NOTES: Be sure to cool these thoroughly before cutting or they will fall apart. Weigh the Caramels, some are larger than others.

Ingredients

  • FOR THE BASE
  • 1 package Devil's food cake mix
  • 1 cup nuts, chopped
  • 1/2 cup butter, chilled
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • FOR THE TOPPING
  • 10 ounces caramel candies, unwrapped
  • 1/3 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup chocolate chip

Preparation

Step 1

1. Grease 9x13" pan or spray with Pam. Preheat oven to 350 F. In a large bowl, combine cake mix and nuts. Cut in the butter. Stir in 1/2 cup of evaporated milk. Spread 1/2 THE BATTER in prepared pan and bake in 350 F oven for 15 mins.

2. While base is baking, microwave the caramels with evaporated milk for 2 minutes. Stir till smooth. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the baked layer. Drizzle the caramel mixture over the chocolate pieces, carefully spreading to cover the chocolate layer. Drop the remaining half of the batter in heaping teaspoonful over the caramel mixture. Return to the oven and bake another 20-25 minutes. When cooked the top layer will be soft. Remove from the oven to a wire cake rack and cool completely in the pan.
