Preparation

Step 1

1. Bake the cake.

You will get about 32 cake pops from a full packet of cake mix so you can split the mix to make less. I find this a bit of a pain so bake the full cake and then freeze what I don't use for a later date. For each 1/4 of a sandwich tin or 1/8 of a sheet cake you will get 4 - 5 cake pops.

The instructions below are based on baking two sandwich tin cakes.

2. Divide the cake into quarters.

Place the quarter into a large freezer bag, seal and then using your hands crumble the cake until it resembles breadcrumbs. Empty the cake into a mixing bowl.

3. Add a large tablespoon of frosting (about 1/4 cup)

Using a spatula, work the frosting through the cake, checking the texture until it can easily be rolled into balls. You can add more frosting if needed.

4. Take a tablespoon of the mix and roll into a ball (using your hands). Place on a plate and repeat. Put in the freezer for a minimum of 15 minutes.

5. Melt the chocolate.

This can be done on the stove in a bowl over simmering water (making sure the water doesn't touch the bottom of the bowl) or in the microwave. The bowl should be deep enough the cake pops can be dipped into the melted chocolate and cover it in one go.

6. Dip the end of the cake pop stick into the chocolate and insert into the cake. Leave for a few minutes to set (this can be done in the fridge / freezer but doesn't need to be).

7. Dip the cake pops into the chocolate. Turn and allow the excess chocolate to drip off.

8. Cover with sprinkles. Stand using the Styrofoam block and leave to set.

The chocolate will set quickly and can be eaten within 10 minutes.

Once dried, they can be carefully laid in an airtight container. They will last around 2 weeks.

And that is it.

The cake will take about half an hour and then, once cooled, to make 12 cake pops will take about an hour. Enjoy!
