Ingredients

  • 4 eggs
  • 375 ml (1 1/2 cup) sugar
  • 30 ml (2 tbsp. butter or margarine)
  • 250 ml (1 cup) milk
  • 500 ml (2 cups) cake flour
  • 10 ml (2 tsp.) baking powder
  • 45 ml (3 tbsp.) cocoa
  • 1 ml (1/4 tsp.) salt
  • 5 ml (1 tbsp.) vanilla essence

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
Grease two sandwich cake tins 220 min diameter, and line the bottom with greased paper.
Beat the eggs thoroughly, gradually adding the sugar.
Beat until light.
Melt the butter in milk (put the butter in the milk and melt in microwave.
Sift together the flour, baking powder, cocoa and salt and then sift this mixture into the egg mixture, fold in carefully and then add vanilla essence.
Add the hot liquid to the mixture and blend quickly.
Pour the batter into the prepared tins. Knock the tins onto the counter a few times to get rid of the air bubbles.
Bake for 25-30 minutes. Test if it is ready with a skewer.
Cool cakes for a few minutes in the tins then turn out onto a wire rack.
When completely cooled, sandwich together with any filling of your choice.
