Ingredients

  • 1 boneless beef top sirloin steak, (1 to 1 1/2-pound) cut 1 to 1 1/2-inches thick
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried herb (such as thyme, basil, oregano, or rosemary)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • Bottled barbecue sauce (optional)

Step 1

Trim fat from steak. Combine onion, garlic, herb or seasoning, salt, and pepper in a small mixing bowl. Sprinkle evenly over both sides of meat; rub in with your fingers.

Grill steak on the rack of an uncovered grill directly over medium coals to desired doneness, turning and brushing once with barbeque sauce, if desired, halfway through grilling. For 1-inch-thick steak, allow 14 to 18 minutes for medium-rare (145 degrees) and 18 to 22 minutes for medium (160 degrees). For 1 1/2-inch-thick steak allow 20 to 24 minutes for medium-rare (145 degrees) and 24 to 28 minutes for medium (160 degrees). Discard brushing sauce.
