KFC Buttermilk Biscuits

By

At each KFC restaurant, workers blend real buttermilk with a dry blend to create the well-know buttermilk biscuits that have been a popular menu item since their introduction in 1982.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup club soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 5 cups Bisquick biscuit mix

Preparation

Step 1

1. Preheat the over to 450 degrees F.

2. Combine all of the ingredients. Knead the dough by hand until smooth.

3. Flour your hands. Pat the dough flat to 3/4-inch thickness on waxed paper and punch out the biscuits with a biscuit cutter.

4. Bake on a greased baking sheet for 12 minutes, or until golden brown.

Makes 18 biscuits.

Tidbits: To produce biscuits that most closely resemble the KFC variety, it is best to use a biscuit cutter for this recipe, as specified above. If you don't have a biscuit cutter, the lid of an aerosol can will suffice (just be sure it's not from a product that is toxic, of course). A lid from a can of nonstick cooking spray, for example, works great.
