Ingredients

  • 2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped pitted dried dates
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350° F. Butter a 9 x 5 x 3 inch loaf pan and set aside.

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the brown sugar.

Place the egg in a mixing bowl and beat until light and fluffy. Stir in the milk, vanilla, and melted butter, mixing until blended.
Stir this mixture into the sifted dry ingredients, mixing thoroughly. Fold in the chopped dates and nuts.

Spoon the batter into the prepared pan and bake about 40 minutes, or until the bread begins to pull away from the sides of the pan
and the center is done when tested. Let cool in the pan.

Yield: Makes 1 Large Loaf
