Chocolate Sundae Pie

My Dad's mothers recipe, served every Sunday at the restaurant in Mansfield Washington

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • Generous dash of nutmeg
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/8 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. Vanilla
  • 1 (pkg. Knox Gelatin)
  • 1/4 tsp. Cream of Tartar
  • Dash of salt
  • 1/8 cup Sugar
  • 1 (Baked Pie shell)
  • 1 small container of cool whip
  • 2 tbsp. Bakers unsweetened chocolate

Preparation

Step 1

Scald milk and nutmeg mixture.
2 eggs (separated) mix yokes with ⅜ cup sugar and ½ tsp. vanilla. Stir into hot mixture cook over low heat until it “coats” a spoon. Remove from heat and stir in: 1 pkg. KNOX Gelatin that has been softened in ¼ cup of water. When mixture is partially set add egg whites that have been beaten stiff with cream of tartar, salt with a ⅛ cup sugar. Gently fold into the gelatin mixture.
Pour into baked pie shell (that has been cooled)
Top with Coolwhip or whipped cream, sprinkle with finely grated unsweetened chocolate. Chill until set (at least 2 hrs.)
