Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (chilled)
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup cold vegetable shortening (I used Crisco)
- 3/4 cup cold milk
Preparation
Step 1
Put flour, shortening, and milk in the freezer until needed.
Prepare a floured work surface. Set out an ungreased baking sheet. Preheat oven to 450° F.
Ok, let's make biscuits!
Whisk together in a mixing bowl, the flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined. Add the shortening and cut it into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center and add the milk; stir into a dough with a large fork (or spoon) just until mixture is combined. Don't over mix it.
Turn dough out onto the floured work surface; sprinkle top lightly with flour then fold the dough over itself 5-6 times, then pat out to about a 3/4" thickness. Cut biscuits out with a 2 to 2 1/2" biscuit cutter and place them on the baking sheet. Re-roll the dough scraps and cut out additional biscuits. (I got 8 biscuits using a 2" cutter.)
Bake biscuits for 10-12 minutes, or until tops are lightly browned. Remove from oven and butter tops of biscuits, if desired, and serve immediately.
