- 4 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 2 pounds confectioners' sugar
- 3 to 4 tablespoons milk or heavy whipping cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Step 1
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter on medium speed until smooth.
Reduce the speed to medium-low and add the confectioners' sugar, about a cup at a time; mix until completely combined.
Add the milk and vanilla extract, and beat until smooth and spreadable.
