Ingredients

  • Dough
  • 2/3 C Crisco
  • 1/2 C sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 t vanilla
  • 1/2 C water
  • 4 C flour
  • 2 t baking powder
  • 1/2 t salt
  • Filling
  • 1 lb. figs, stemmed, washed and ground on setting #4 of a meat grinder
  • 1/2 C raisins
  • 1/2 C candied fruit
  • 1 C toasted almonds (bake 29 minutes at 350)
  • 1/4 t allspice
  • 1 C honey
  • 1 large Hershey bar
  • 1/4 t cinnamon
  • Frosting
  • 1 C Confectioner's sugar
  • 1/4 T vanilla
  • 1/4 t Milk

Preparation

Step 1

For the dough: combine flour, salt and baking powder and set aside. In a separate bowl, cream together the Crisco and vanilla. Add eggs and vanilla. Slowly add the flour mixture, using water to keep dough smooth. Roll out on a pastry cloth into 4" x 12" strips.

For the filling: Combine all ingredients, adding water to make it spreadable. Spread onto 1/2 of the dough, about 1/4 " thick. Fold dough over filling. Cut into cookie size. Splay the ends.

Bake at 375 for 18 - 20 minutes. Cool, then frost. Sprinkle with colored nonpareils.
