Grandma's Casserole (Aunt Mary Sue)

A handy casserole to prepare the night before, refrigerate and bake when needed.

Ingredients

  • 1 c. chopped onion
  • 1 green pepper cut into strips
  • 2 Tbs. butter
  • 1 1/2 lbs. ground chuck
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. monosodium glutamate (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1 Tbs. sugar
  • 1 can (1 lb. 12 ozs) whole tomatoes
  • 1 can (15oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 c. water
  • 1 pkg.(8 ozs) uncooked wide noodles
  • 1 8 oz. pkg. mozzarella cheese sliced

Preparation

Step 1

In dutch oven, saute chopped onion and green pepper in butter for 3 minutes. Add ground chuck and brown meat, breaking up meat with spoon as it cooks. Add salt, monosodium glutamate (optional), pepper and sugar. Stir in whole tomatoes, tomato sauce and water. Heat mixture to boiling, reduce heat and simmer 15 minutes.

Into a 13 x 9 x 2 inch pan, layer tomato meat mixture and 1 pkg.(8 ozs) uncooked wide noodles. Top with sliced mozzarella. Make sure noodles are well covered by sauce.

Cover pan with aluminium foil and bake in preheated 350°f. oven for 45 minutes.

Cut and serve as you would lasagna.
