Ingredients
- 2 pounds stew beef
- 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
- 4 cups water
- 2 tbsp. Worchestershire sauce
- 2 cloves garlic, peeled
- 4 bay leaves
- 2 medium onions
- 2 tsp.salt
- 2 tsp. sugar
- 1 tsp. pepper
- 1 tsp. paprika
- Dash ground allspice or ground cloves
- 3 large carrots, sliced
- 3 ribs celery, chopped
- 2 tbsp. cornstarch

Step 1
Brown meat in hot oil. Add water, Worchestershire sauce, garlic, bay leaves, onion, salt,sugar, pepper, paprika and allspice. Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours. Remove bay leaves and garlic cloves.. Add carrots and celery. Cover and cook 30-40-minutes longer. To thicken gravy, remove 2 cups of hot liquid. Using a separate bowl, combine 1/4 cup cold water and corn starch until smooth. Mix with a little of the hot liquid and return to pot. stir and cook until bubbly.
