Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (4-ounces; 1 stick) unsalted butter room temperature
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup milk
- 6 bars (1.55-ounce) plain Hershey's bars unwrapped
Preparation
Step 1
(This is scaled down recipe: from 24 to 12 servings; 1 pan.)
Hands on: 15 minutes
Total time: 40 minutes, plus cooling time
Grease and flour one 9-by-13-inch pan. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract. In a small bowl, combine the flour and baking powder. Beat in the flour in 3 additions until just combined, alternating with the milk in 2 additions. Spread evenly in one 9X13 pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 17 to 20 minutes until a tester inserted in the center comes out clean and the cake springs back when lightly touched in the center. Remove the cake from the oven, place on cooling rack and immediately top with the chocolate bars. (I leave in pan and place chocolate bars on cake and spread, then serve from pan or wait and cut into squares to serve.) After a few minutes, use an offset spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly over the cakes. Let cool completely, then cut cake into 12 squares.
Variation: If you have only one 9-by-13-inch pan, don't worry. The batter will all fit into one - just bake it a little longer, about 30 to 35 minutes. You'll only need 6 chocolate bars to top the single cake.
