  • Grease and flour for pan
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 2 tsp baking soda

1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease and flour a 9-by-13-inch pan.

2. In a large bowl, work together flour, sugar, brown sugar, and shortening to form crumbs. Reserve 1 cup of the mixture.

3. In a separate bowl, mix molasses, hot water, and baking soda.

4. Combine wet and dry mixtures. Pour into prepared baking pan. Sprinkle reserved crumbs on top. Bake 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350°F and bake 30 to 40 minutes more or until a sharp knife inserted in center comes out clean.
