Hungarian Walnut Torte

Ingredients

  • Butter Icing:
  • 9 eggs, separated
  • 2 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup black coffee
  • 2 1/4 cups cake flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups ground walnuts (loosely
  • packed)
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup scalded milk
  • 1 egg white- not beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation

Step 1

For Torte:

1. Mix egg yolks, sugar and coffee.
2. Add combined flour, baking powder
vanilla and nuts
3. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites
4. Put wax/parchment paper on the
bottom of 3 9 inch "ungreased"
cake pans
5. Bake in a 325- 350 degree oven for
17 minutes or until cakes spring
back.

For Butter Icing:
1. Cream shortening and butter.
2. Add salt, sugar, egg white and
vanilla.
3. Add milk one teaspoon at a time.
Beat until creamy.

You may not need to use all of the milk. Icing recipe can be doubled.
Do not frost cakes until they have cooled completely. Refrigerate before serving.
