BUTTERMILK BISCUITS

Family prefers the cheese version of this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup shortening, margarine or butter
  • 1 tbs baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cups buttermilk

Preparation

Step 1

In mixing bowl, stir together flour, baking power, baking soda, sugar, cream of tartar and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center, add buttermilk. Stir just until dough clings together.

On lightly floured surface, knead dough gently for 10-12 strokes. Roll or pat dough to ½ inch thickness. Cut with a 2 ½ inch biscuit cutter, dipping cuter into flour between cuts.

Transfer biscuits to baking sheet. Bake at 450 10-12 min.

CHEESE BISCUITS

Prepare as above, except add ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese to flour mixture with the milk.
