Preparation

Step 1

Make a syrup with first 5 ingredients. Cook and simmer until syrupy.

Peel, core and slice apples.

Sift flour, salt and baking powder. Cut in shortening. Add milk all at once and stir until moistened. Roll 1/4 in thick. Cut in 5 inch squares. (I divide the dough into 6 pieces and roll out indiviually into circles or squares). Arrange apples on each piece of dough and aprinkle with additional sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Dot with butter. fold corners to center, pinch edges together. Place one inch apart in greased baking pan. Pour over syrup. Bake at 375 degrees for about 35 minutes. Enjoy!

Dumplings can be made ahead and frozen then just make syrup, pour over when ready to bake.
