Ingredients

  • 3 3/4 cups flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground mace
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • oil for frying
  • 3/4 cup icing sugar
  • 2 teaspoons warm water

Step 1

Sift flour, baking powder, mace and salt onto waxed paper.

Beat sugar, eggs, and shortening at medium until fluffy. Blend in milk and vanilla. Stir in flour until well blended. Wrap dough in paper. Chill 2 hours.

Roll to 1/2-inch thickness on floured board. Cut out in circles.

Heat oil to 370. Drop in 3 doughnuts at a time. Fry 3 minutes, turning once.

Combine icing sugar and water. Drizzle over cooled doughnuts.
