Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
- 2/3 cup milk
Preparation
Step 1
Mix together flour, baking powder, salt, cream of tartar, and sugar; cut in shortening with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add milk all at once; stir only till dough follows fork around bowl. Turn out on floured surface; knead gently about 7 times. (This is important as it helps make the biscuits flaky).
Pat the dough out to about ½ inch thickness. Cut with a biscuit cutter (*Do not twist as you cut, make a clean edge).
Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 450°F for 10 - 12 minutes, until golden brown. Serve immediately.
