  • 2 Cup flour
  • 1 Tbl sugar
  • 2 -1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 Tsp salt
  • 2 Tbl shortening
  • 3/4 Cup warm water
  • Oil for frying


Servings 8


Step 1

1. Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening; stir in water until combined. Knead, adding more flour if necessary, for 2 minutes. Let dough rest in covered bowl for 25 minutes.

2. Roll dough on lightly floured surface until 1/4 inch thick. Cut in diamond shaped pieces.

3. Pour oil to 2 inches depth in saucepan. Heat to 400. Add two pieces of dough at a time and cook until puffed; turn to brown other side. Put in paper towel lined bowl to drain. Serve warm with butter, honey, cinnamon-sugar or powdered sugar.
