Ingredients

  • 1

    envelope dry grandular yeast

  • 1/4

    cup warm water

  • 1

    tsp. sugar

  • 2

    cups sifted flour

  • 1/2

    tsp. salt

  • 3/4

    cup butter

  • 2

    eggs separated

  • 1/2

    cup sugar

  • 1/2

    cup chopped nuts

  • 1

    tsp vanilla

  • powdered sugar

  • marachino cherries

Directions

Sprinkle yeast over warm water. Add 1 tsp.sugar. Let stand for 10 minutes or until softened. Sift together flour and salt. cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Blend egg yolks and softened yeast. Mix until a soft ball is formed. Chill Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry. Gradually beat in 1/2 cup sugar. Fold in vanilla Divide dough in half. Roll out each half on to lightly floured parchment paper. Spread with egg whites and sprinkle with nuts and chopped marachino cherries. Roll up as for a jelly roll. fLIP over to opposite side. Place on greased baking sheet. Make an i/2 inch deep cut down the center of roll. Sprinkle in slit nuts and cherries. You can freeze. bake at 375 degrees . When warm spread with butter cream icing.
