Caramel Chocolate Squares

This bar recipe will take care of any chocolate/caramel craving you have!
Ingredients
- 1 bag of caramels, unwrapped
- 1 can evaporated milk
- 1 box of German Chocolate Cake Mix
- 1 cup flaked cocoanut
- 2/3 cup butter, melted
- 3/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
- 1 package mini semi-sweet chocolate chips (6 oz. size)
Preparation
Step 1
Heat oven to 350 degrees. In a small saucepan, heat the caramels and 1/4 cup of the evaporated milk over medium heat, stirring constantly until the caramel is completely melted. Keep this caramel mixture warm, stirring occasionally, until ready to use it.
In a separate large bowl, mix the cake mix (dry) with the melted butter, remaining evaporated milk and the nuts. Spread half of the dough (about 1 1/2 cup) onto the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch un-greased pan. Bake in oven for 6 minutes. Remove from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the mini chocolate chips and then the cocoanut on top of the baked layer. Then drizzle the melted caramel mixture over the top of that as your next layer. Using a cookie scoop, if you have one, drop the rest of the dough mixture by scoop fulls on top of the caramel. Do not try to spread this top layer of the dough around. Just leave it in the scoops, they will spread on their own while baking. Bake in the oven again until the cake portion is slightly dry to the touch. This takes about 15-20 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool completely before cutting into bars.
