Individual Nut Roll

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 Crisco
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 pkgs. dry yeast
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 4 egg whites
  • 4 cups sifted flour

Preparation

Step 1

Dissolve sugar and yeast in 1/4 cup lukewarm water. Let stand until it foams. Beat egg yolks slightly with 1/2 tsp. water. Blend butter, Crisco and salt. Mix in flour as for a pie crust.
Blend beaten egg yolks and yeast mixture.
Add the liquid mixture to the flour mixture. Mix gently like you would a pie crust. Keep dough in a bowl as a ball of dough. (If dough is stiff add a few drops of milk.)
Filling: Mix stiffly beaten egg whites and 3/4 pound ground walnuts. Mix in 1 cup of sugar and mix well. Divide dough in 3 or 4 parts. Roll one part on a sugar-sprinkled board. Roll thin - but be careful.
Spread nut mixture like butter and roll to shape of a sausage link. Cut in 1 inch pieces. Place pieces on ungreased cook sheet. Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown - about 9 minutes. Remember to allow enough space for rolls to raise while baking.
