Ingredients
- 3 c. flour
- 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 1 c. shortening
- 1 3/4 c. sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 c. milk
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. allspice
- 1/4 tsp. cloves
- 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
- 2 tsp. sugar
- 2 tsp. butter
- 1/8 tsp. soda
- 1 1/2 T. hot water
- 1 square unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
Preparation
Step 1
Cream shortening and sugar; add eggs, 1 at a time, beating after each addition. Add sifted dry ingredients, alternately with milk and vanilla. Divide batter into thirds. To the first part add cinnamon, allspice, cloves and nutmeg; blend. To second part, add combined sugar, butter, soda, water and chocolate. Blend Well. Leave rest of batter plain. Pour into 3 greased and lined layer pans. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool. Spread vanilla cream filling between layers. Frost with chocolate frosting.
