Ingredients

  • 1 chicken cut in big pieces
  • 4 or 5 potatoes thinly sliced
  • 4 big onion thinly sliced
  • 2 tomatoes cut in small pieces
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons yogurt
  • little yellow food color or saffron mixed with a little water
  • 1 tablespoon garlic and ginger crushed
  • whole masala (1 tsp Jiru (cumin seeds) 4 pieces cinnamon, 2 cloves and 4 whole black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon of Garam Masala
  • Salt and Red Chili powder to taste
  • 2 cups of rice

Preparation

Step 1

Boil the Chicken with one teaspoon of garlic and salt (approx 20 minutes till done)
Fry Onion then Potatoes till brown
Heat 2 tablespoon of ghee and put whole masala (spices) in, Then add the tomatoes, garlic, ginger and rest of the spices.
Add 3-4 tablespoons of tomato paste
Cook at low heat 2-3 minutes
Add Chicken, fried onions and potatoes (saving some onions to use later), Turn off heat and
Add 2 tablespoons of yogurt and either the yellow food coloring or a little saffron with a little water (soak for few minutes before adding)
If you don't have yogurt you can use a little lemon juice.
Mix well

Boil rice till it is a little uncooked

In a casserole dish or any baking dish add a little ghee then add a layer of rice, then the prepared chicken then cover with remaining rice covering all the chicken. Use the saved onions and sprinkle on top then use more of either the yellow food coloring or the saffron soaked in water and drizzle over the rice.

cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
