FANNY MAY FUDGE

By

When I was a teenager, all of my allowance went for food - a hot dog and tamale sold by one of the many pushcart vendors throughout our neighborhood, a beef sandwich (of course), a cannoli from Ancona’s bakery, lupines from a sidewalk vendor, Italian lemonade, or a ½ pound of fudge - no nuts. Fudge is probably my favorite sweet.

My sister-in-law, Joan, obtained this recipe from a former employee of Fanny May. I always sent half a recipe to Anthony when he was at college, or for his birthday. I was, however, always tempted to eat it all myself - see what you do for your kids?

  • 4

Ingredients

  • 4 Cups sugar
  • 1 Cup half and half
  • 1 Tsp. vanilla
  • 1 Cup butter
  • 13 Oz. Hershey Chocolate candy bar (plain)
  • 2 Oz. package unsweetened chocolate
  • 12 Oz. package chocolate chips
  • 25 Large Marshmallows (snip in half with scissors)
  • Optional: 1 Cup walnuts

Preparation

Step 1

Boil milk, sugar, vanilla and butter - rolling boil for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Turn heat off (electric range) or on gas range, set flame to lowest possible setting. Immediately add marshmallows, stirring to melt. Add unsweetened chocolate, stirring to melt, Hershey chocolate, chocolate chips, stirring, stirring and stirring. If using nuts, add when all chocolate is melted.

Pour quickly into a buttered 11x16 or 9x13 jelly roll pan. Cool thoroughly.

Makes four pounds of heavenly fudge.
