Ingredients
- CRUST:
- 1 3/4 cups oats
- 1 3/4 cups flour
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- FILLING:
- 1 pkg. chopped dates (2 1/4 cups)
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 cup chopped nuts

Preparation
Step 1
Crust:
Cream together shortening and brown sugar. Add dry ingredients and beat with mixer until crumbly. Reserve 1 ½ cups of mixture and press the remaining mixture into the bottom of a glass pan.
Filling:
Cook until thick, stirring constantly. Pour over crust (a wet spatula will help with the spreading). Sprinkle reserved oat mixture over the top of the date filling. (If the oat mixture is not crumbly, you may need to add oats and mix until crumbly.) Bars are done when crust looks light brown through the bottom of the glass pan.
