- vegetable shortening (Crisco)
- 2 tbs all-purpose flour
- 2 cake mixes

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Grease inside pan thoroughly. Sprinkle flour into pan and shake so flour covers the entire greased surface. Turn pan over and gently tap out any excess flour. Ensure entire pan is covered with grease AND flour.
Make cake mix as directed. (For firmer cakes, use only 1 or 2 tbs of the oil) Pour approximately 11 cups of batter into the pan (1/2 - 2/3 full). Bake on middle rack for 30 – 40 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean from the center.
Remove cake from oven and cool on cake rack for 10 minutes. Then, carefully slice off the raised center portion of the cake. To remove cake from pan, place the cake rack against the cake and turn both the cake rack and the pan over. Lift pan off carefully. Cool cake for at least one hour before decorating. Brush loose crumbs off the cake.
