Sausage Pinwheels

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Odom’s Tennessee Pride Country Sausage (mild, hot, or sage), at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 (scant) cup buttermilk

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350° F. Cut shortening into flour with pastry blender or two knives in mixing bowl until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add buttermilk and stir with a fork just until blended. Turn out onto floured board and knead gently until smooth, about 10 times.

Roll dough into a 14 x 10-inch rectangle. Spread sausage almost to edges of dough.

Roll up jelly roll-style, beginning with long side. Slice into ½-inch rounds. Place on baking sheet.

Bake 30 minutes or until golden brown.



Note: You may substitute all-purpose flour for the self-rising by sifting 1 tablespoon baking powder and ¾ teaspoon salt with 2 cups all-purpose flour.
