Sausage Stromboli

By

“A stromboli is a Philadelphia specialty, featuring meat and cheese fillings encased in pizza dough. This is sure to be a hit!”

Ingredients

  • 1 pound bulk Italian pork sausage
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 can (4-ounce) mushroom pieces, drained
  • 2 cups marinara sauce, divided
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 can (13.8-ounce) refrigerated pizza dough
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 400°F. Lightly grease a baking sheet.

Cook the sausage and onion in a 10-inch skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sausage is browned, 4–6 minutes. Stir in the mushrooms, 1 cup marinara sauce and the Italian seasoning.

Unroll the dough on the prepared baking sheet. Pat the dough to form a 12- x 8-inch rectangle. Spread the sausage mixture lengthwise down the center of one half of the dough, leaving a 2-inch border on each short side and a 1-inch border on the long side. Sprinkle the mozzarella over the sausage mixture.

Fold the long side of the dough over the filling, pressing the edges to seal. Brush the dough with the oil. Sprinkle with the Parmesan. Bake until golden brown, 15–20 minutes. Serve warm with remaining marinara sauce, heated, on the side.
