Basque Sheepherder's Bread

Ingredients

  • 3 cups warm water
  • 1/2 cup (1/4 pound) butter or margarine, melted
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 5 teaspoons yeast
  • 9 to 9 1/2 cups white flour
  • Note: Ingredients can be halved to make a smaller amount.

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix water, butter (margarine), sugar and salt together.
Add yeast.
Let yeast ferment 10 - 12 minutes.
Mix flour and knead dough until it is through taking the flour.
Cover and let rise in a warm place 1 1/2 hours.
Break dough into 3 to 4 loaves.
Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
Bake for 30 minutes.
