Ingredients

  • 1/2 c Crisco
  • 1 1/2 c white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 c red food colouring
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 c buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 c sifted cake flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp cocoa
  • Icing
  • 1 c icing sugar
  • 1 Tb vanilla
  • 1 c milk
  • 5 Tb flour
  • 1 c butter

Preparation

Step 1

Cream sugar and Crisco until light and fluffy
Add eggs, one at a time and beat 1 min
Put food colouring and cocoa in a cup
Make a paste and add to the above
Add salt
Put vanilla in the buttermilk
Add slowly to the mixture alternately, the milk and flour
Sprinkle soda over the top
Mix again
Bake in 2 9" pans at 350 for 30-40 min

Icing
Heat flour and milk until thickened but lump free
Beat icing sugar and vanilla and add flour mixture
