  • 1 can(14 1/2 oz) pitted tart cherries, undrained
  • 1 cup sugar, divided
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp grated lemon peel
  • dash salt
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 3 tbsp butter, melted

Step 1

In lg saucepan, combine cherries with juice, 3/4 cup sugar and water. Bring to boil, cover and reduce heat to simmer.
Meanwhile, in small bowl, combine flour, baking powder, lemon peel, salt and remaining sugar. Stir in milk and butter just until moistened.
Drop by tbsp onto simmering cherry mixture. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Do not lift cover while simmering.
