Apple Sauce Tollhouse Cookies

Apple sauce adds a nice flavor and texture here.

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cup oatmeal *
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, optional
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup apple sauce
  • 2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup walnuts - chopped (optional)

Preparation

Step 1

*If you prefer, omit the oatmeal and add extra 1/4 cup of all purpose flour.
Mix all the dry ingredients together in a bowl and set aside.

In a mixer bowl, cream the brown and white sugar with the butter. Add in the egg and vanilla and blend well. Fold in the applesauce, then dry ingredients and finally the chocolate chips and nuts.
Preheat the oven to 375 F. oven. Prepare doubled up baking sheets (one inside the other) with parchment paper. Bake, reducing temperature to 350 F for 12 to 14 minutes until cookies are just set up and slightly dry looking but they will deflate a bit as they cool.

Cool 15 minutes before removing. Makes 2-3 dozen depending on size.
