Gluhwein*

Ingredients

  • 1 750-ml dry red wine
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/4 cup slivered almonds
  • 1 Tbs. anisette liqueur
  • 1 cinnamon stick, broken in half
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1/4 tsp. packed, finely grated lemon peel
  • 1/4 tsp. packed, finely grated orange peel
  • 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise

Preparation

Step 1

Combine wine, sugar, raisins, almonds, andisette, cinnamon stick, cloves, lemon peel, and orange peel, in heavy large saucepan. Scrape in seeds from vanilla bean, add bean. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat and simmer 15 minutes to blend flavors.
