Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1/3 cup coarsely chopped onion (1 small)
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
- 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 cup ketchup
- 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
Preparation
Step 1
In a large saucepan combine the water, onion, butter, brown sugar, mustard, vinegar, and 1/8 teaspoon black pepper. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes. Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, and, if desired, cayenne pepper. Return to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 50 to 60 minutes or until desired consistency. Transfer to a storage container; cover and chill overnight.
