    tablespoons cocoa

  • 2

    ounces red food coloring

  • 1/2

    cup shortening

  • 1 1/2

    cups sugar

  • 2

    eggs

  • 1

    cup buttermilk

  • 2 1/2

    cups all-purpose flour

  • 1

    teaspoon salt

  • 1

    teaspoon vanilla

  • 1

    tablespoon vinegar

  • 1

    teaspoon soda

  • CREAM CHEESE FROSTING:

  • 1/2

    cup (1 stick) butter

  • 1

    box powdered sugar

  • 1

    (8 ounce) package cream cheese, at room temperature

  • 1

    teaspoon vanilla

Directions

Mix and set aside cocoa and food coloring. Cream shortening and sugar. Add coloring paste and eggs. Beat well. Add buttermilk and flour - sifted 3 more times after measuring. Add salt and vanilla. Mix well and stir in by spoon the vinegar. When well blended, add soda. Bake in 3 8-inch or 2 9-inch pans for 30 to 35 minutes at 350deg. - CREAM CHEESE FROSTING: Blend all ingredients and add enough powdered sugar to make spreading consistency.
