    egg whites

    cup butter or Crisco

    cups sugar

  • 3/4

    cup milk or water

  • 3 1/2

    cups all-purpose flour

    tablespoon baking powder

    teaspoon salt

    teaspoon vanilla

  • 8

    egg yolks

  • 1 1/2

    cups sugar

  • 1

    cup nuts

  • 1/2

    teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/4

    teaspoon nutmeg

  • 1/4

    teaspoon cloves

  • 1/2

    cup water

  • 1

    teaspoon vanilla

  • 1

    cup butter

  • 2

    tablespoons cocoa

  • 2

    cups raisins

Directions

Cream butter and 1 scant cup of sugar; cream well. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt; add alternately with milk and vanilla. Add 1 cup sugar to egg whites and let stand awhile. Beat stiff. Fold into mixture. - Bake at 350deg for about 25 minutes. Makes 3 large or 4 small layers. - FROSTING: Mix; cook in double boiler. Boil until it begins to thicken. Remove from heat and spread between layers.
