Grandma O's Ginger Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 C sugar
  • 1 C molasses
  • 1 C shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 C cold water
  • 5 C flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking soda in a little hot water
  • Frosting----------------------------
  • 1 T butter
  • 6 T milk
  • 1 C brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 C SIFTED powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

- Bring sugar, shortening, molasses to a boil;cool
- Add rest of coolkie ingredients and mix well; refrigerate overnight
- Roll out to 1/4 inch thick and cut with 3 in. round cutter
- Bake at 350 for 7 -8 min until no fingerprint remains
- When cookies have cooled, boil butter, milk and brown sugar together for 1 min; remove from heat and add 1 C of the powdered sugar and beat well
- Cool slightly then add the vanilla and the other cup of sugar and beat well; thin with milk if necessary
- Frost cookies quickly while glaze is warm - spread in a thin layer; may rewarm slightly on the stove if it hardens too much or try putting the pan in another pan of hot water while you frost the cookies
- When frosting set; store cookies in layers with waxed paper between
